Common questions
Why do I wake at 3 a.m.?
Sleep gets lighter in the early hours, so noise, a warm room, stress, alcohol or a full bladder can wake you. Often it is a mix of small things.
Should I get out of bed?
If you have been awake for around 20 minutes and feel wound up, many sleep guides suggest a quiet, dimly lit activity until you feel sleepy, then returning to bed.
When is night waking a medical issue?
If it happens most nights for weeks, or comes with loud snoring, pauses in breathing, low mood or daytime exhaustion, talk to a doctor. This is general information, not medical advice.
