Part 1: Start here, and Lesson 1: The shape of a night

Welcome. This is a six-lesson, read-at-your-own-pace course about why nights go the way they do. It is written in plain English, with a short quiz after each lesson and a few habits to test at the end.

What this course does and does not do

It does:

  • Explain, in everyday words, what happens across a night, how your body clock works, and how light, caffeine, alcohol and evening habits can influence waking.
  • Give you a short list of behavioral habits you can try, one at a time.
  • Include six quizzes (with answers), a glossary, printable worksheets and a one-page summary.
  • Tell you clearly when it is time to talk to a clinician.

It does not:

  • Diagnose anything or offer medical advice.
  • Suggest supplements or medicines, or tell you to start or stop either.
  • Promise any result. People differ, and nights vary for everyone.

You do not need any background. Plan on about 20 to 30 minutes per lesson. You can do one a day, or one a week. Read the lessons in order; each builds a little on the one before.
