Part 1: Why nap, and which kind
Welcome. This guide is for people whose night sleep gets broken or squeezed: shift workers, parents of babies and small children, caregivers, and anyone who is simply short on sleep. It explains how to nap in a way that helps, and how to avoid the naps that make the night worse.
This is general wellbeing information, not medical advice. It does not diagnose or treat any condition. Napping is not a replacement for enough night sleep, and it cannot promise that you will feel rested. See a doctor if you are sleepy all day despite enough time in bed, if you fall asleep without meaning to, if you snore loudly or stop breathing in your sleep, or if you have had low mood for more than a couple of weeks. Never drive or operate machinery when you feel drowsy.
Why napping can help
When you are short on sleep, your body builds up a pressure to sleep. A short nap can lower that pressure for a few hours. Many people find that a nap makes them feel more alert and calmer, and that it helps them get through a night shift or a hard day with a baby. Naps are not a cure for exhaustion, and they do not erase a long run of short nights. They are a tool, and like any tool, they work better with a plan.
