Part 1: How jet lag works and which way you are flying

Welcome. This guide helps you plan your sleep around a long trip: before you leave, on the plane, when you land, and when you come home. It is written for ordinary travelers, for a vacation, a family visit or a work trip, and it uses plain steps you can print and tick off.

This is general wellbeing information, not medical advice. It does not diagnose or treat any condition and cannot promise that you will avoid jet lag. See a doctor before travel if you have a heart, lung, clotting or sleep condition, if you are pregnant, if you take regular medicines, or if you are thinking about using any supplement or sleep aid. Ask a doctor or pharmacist before taking anything to help you sleep on a trip, particularly with alcohol, and never before driving.

What jet lag is

Your body runs on an inner clock of about 24 hours. It uses light, meals, and activity as time signals. When you cross time zones faster than the clock can follow, the clock says "3 a.m." while the local time says "noon". The result can be sleepiness at the wrong time, waking in the middle of the night, a dull head, hunger at odd hours, and a low mood or irritability.

What is in each part

  1. How jet lag works and which way you are flying
  2. Before you fly and on the plane
  3. The arrival plan, day by day
  4. Coming home, special cases, and your trip planner
