Part 1: The commute reset idea, and safety first

Welcome. Your commute can be 20 minutes of lost time, or it can be a gentle boundary between work and home. This guide gives you a simple 20-minute reset in four short stages, with different versions for people who drive and people who ride a train, bus or subway. It needs no app, no headphones and no special gear.

Safety first, especially if you drive

If you are driving, your only job is driving. Every step in the driver's version of this guide is designed to be done with eyes open on the road, hands on the wheel, and your attention where it belongs. Do not close your eyes. Do not use a phone. Do not write, read, or scroll. Do not do any exercise that makes you dizzy, drowsy or distracted. If anything in this guide makes you feel less alert at the wheel, stop that step and focus on driving. If you feel very sleepy, pull over safely and rest, or end the drive.

The passenger's version is for trains, buses, subways, ferries, carpools where you are not driving, and parked time before you go inside.
