Part 1: How to use the Tonight Cards
Welcome. This is a short, printable set of ten bedside cards for the middle of the night. Each card holds one calm step. Together they give you a plan to follow, so you do not have to work out what to do at 3 a.m.
Many people wake at some point in the night. It is common, and it does not mean something is wrong. What helps is knowing, ahead of time, what you will do. That is all this set is: a plan made in daylight and kept within reach.
What this set does and does not do
It does:
- Give you ten large-print cards, one step each, to print and keep by the bed.
- Give you a "choose your path" overview so you can see all the steps at a glance.
- Explain the reason behind each step in a sentence or two, so the steps make sense.
- Include a morning reset card and a "when to see a clinician" card.
- Show you how to print the cards so they are easy to read in dim light.
It does not:
- Promise any particular night. Some nights will be calmer, and some will not. The cards are a routine to try, not a guarantee.
- Offer medical advice, diagnose anything, or suggest supplements or medicines.
- Ask you to track, score, or judge your nights. You can use the cards without a notebook.
This is general wellbeing information, not medical advice. The last card tells you when to talk to a clinician.
The idea in one paragraph
When you wake at night, a few things tend to make it feel longer: checking the clock, bright light, picking up a phone, and following a busy thought down a long road. The cards take each of those one at a time. Keep the room dim, keep the clock turned away, slow your breathing, put your thoughts on paper or set them aside with a short phrase, and, if you are still wide awake after a while, move to a chair for something quiet. Then go back to bed when you feel drowsy, not before.
Set up in ten minutes, during the day
Do this once, in the daytime, when you feel clear-headed.
- Print the cards. Part 3 explains how, including the large-print and dim-light settings.
- Cut or fold them. Stack the ten cards in order, with the overview card on top.
- Pick a card spot. A bedside table or drawer works. You want to reach them without turning on a bright light.
- Choose your chair. Decide now where you would sit if you got up. A chair in another room, or a corner of the bedroom away from the bed, works well. Put a blanket there.
- Choose a dim light. A small lamp with a warm, low bulb is better than an overhead light. A night-light is fine.
- Pick two quiet activities. A paper book, a puzzle book, or knitting are examples. Put them by the chair. Part 2 has more ideas.
- Turn the clock face away, or cover it. If your phone is your clock, put it face down, across the room if you can.
- Put a pad and pen by the chair. You will use them for card 7.
That is the whole setup. It costs very little and takes less time than reading this page.
How the cards work
Think of the cards as a short ladder. You start at the top and only move down if you want to.
- Cards 1 to 3 are for when you first wake. You stay in bed. You keep things dark, quiet and slow.
- Cards 4 to 6 are for when you notice you are still wide awake and feeling restless after a while. You get up briefly, to a dim place.
- Cards 7 to 9 are for busy thoughts. You write things down, park them, and put tomorrow in its place.
- Card 10 is for the return to bed.
You do not have to use every card. Some nights, card 1 and card 3 are all you need. Other nights you will reach card 10. Either is fine.
Keep it kind. No clock-watching, no effort, no pressure. If a card does not suit you, skip it.
Next, turn to Part 2 for the ten cards.
