Part 1: What it is, how common it is, and the loop
This guide is for adults 18 and over. It is educational and non-explicit. It is not medical advice and it does not replace a doctor. If you have pain, a sudden change, or any worry about your health, please see a doctor (details are in Part 4).
Coming sooner than you or your partner would like is one of the most common sexual concerns among men. It is also one of the least talked about. Many people carry it alone for years, feeling embarrassed, when it is usually something that can be understood and often eased.
This guide will not diagnose you, and it cannot promise a result. What it can do is explain what is going on in plain words, give you a practice plan you can follow at your own pace, help you talk with a partner, and tell you when a doctor is the right next step.
What premature ejaculation is
Doctors and researchers use the term "premature ejaculation", often shortened to PE, for a pattern where ejaculation happens sooner than the person wants, with little sense of control over when, and where this causes distress for one or both partners. Three ideas sit inside that definition.
