Part 1: What the pelvic floor does for sexual comfort

This guide is for adults 18 and over. It is educational and non-explicit. It is not medical advice and it does not replace a doctor or a pelvic floor physical therapist. If you have pain, bleeding, leaking that is new, or any sudden change, please see a professional first (details are in Part 4).

Most people have never been told what the pelvic floor is, let alone how it connects to sex. Yet this group of muscles, tucked inside the bowl of the pelvis, takes part in arousal, comfort, sensation and orgasm for people of every sex. When the muscles are too tight, too weak, or simply not coordinated, sex can feel uncomfortable, numb or hard to enjoy. The good news is that these muscles can often be understood and trained, usually with a little guidance.

This guide is for men and women, and for anyone with a pelvic floor, whatever their partner's sex. It does not promise a particular outcome, and it is not a substitute for assessment. It explains the basics, offers gentle awareness and relaxation exercises, and helps you know when to ask for help. For the wider picture of pelvic floor health at any age, see Pelvic Floor Basics for Every Age on this shelf.
