Part 1: Start here, and what to sort out in week 8

Kindergarten is a big step for a child and a big step for the adult who loves them. This planner gives you eight weeks of small, doable jobs, so the last week before school is calm and not a scramble. It is written for parents and caregivers in the US. Rules and dates differ by state and district, so always check with your own school.

This is general information, not medical or educational advice.

How to use this planner

  • Part 1 (this one): the paperwork, questions to ask, and your starting snapshot.
  • Part 2: weeks 8 to 5: the paperwork, the health check, the school tour and the first practice.
  • Part 3: weeks 4 to 1: the daily routine, skills practice, supplies and the goodbye plan.
  • Part 4: the first day, the first week, the first month, worries, and when to ask for help.

Each week has about five small jobs, and each should take 10 to 20 minutes. Tick them off as you go. If you start with fewer than eight weeks, do the weeks in order but squeeze: do two weeks' jobs at once, and do the paperwork first.
