Part 1: Is it time? Lesson 1
Welcome to First Phone, Step by Step. This is a six-lesson, text-only course for a parent who is about to give a child (roughly 10 to 13) a first phone. Each lesson takes 20 to 30 minutes to read and has a worksheet. By the end you will have a setup checklist, a written family agreement and a plan to review it.
What this course does, and does not do
It does: walk you through timing, setup, rules, hard conversations and review, in the order you will need them.
It does not:
- Tell you the "right" age. There is none. Children are different and so are families.
- Promise that your child will be safe online. Nothing can. The aim is a sensible start and a child who comes to you when something feels wrong.
- Give legal, medical or counseling advice. If you have a serious worry about your child's wellbeing, talk to your pediatrician, school counselor or a family professional.
- Teach exact button-by-button steps. App and phone menus change with every update. We give you the settings to look for, and you find the current names on your device.
