Part 1: How the urinary tract works and what a UTI is
A urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most common reasons women see a doctor. Most are short, treatable and not dangerous. A few can turn serious, and that is why it helps to know the signs. This guide explains how the bladder works, how to lower your chances of a UTI, and when to call. It is education, not medical advice. Only a clinician who knows your history can tell you what is going on in your body.
How the urinary tract works
Your urinary tract is a drainage system. It has four main parts:
- Kidneys. Two organs on either side of your back, below the ribs. They filter your blood and make urine.
- Ureters. Two thin tubes that carry urine from each kidney down to the bladder.
- Bladder. A stretchy muscle bag that stores urine. Most adults feel the first urge to go when it is partly full, and can usually wait a while longer.
- Urethra. The short tube that carries urine out of the body.
