Part 1: Start here, and Lesson 1: What is typical

Welcome. This is a seven-lesson course for a parent or guardian who wants to get ready for a child's first period: the talk, the supplies, school, and the first day. It is written to you, in plain English, and you can finish it in a week or spread it over a month.

What this course does and does not do

It does:

  • Walk you through seven short lessons, each with one small exercise.
  • Give you words to use, a supply plan, a school plan, and a plan for the first day.
  • Help you build a short list of questions for a doctor or nurse.
  • Include a dad's version of the key points, for fathers, stepdads and other male guardians. Everyone is welcome to read it.

It does not:

  • Replace advice from your child's doctor or nurse. Health points are general and describe what is typical.
  • Cover sex education beyond the basics of puberty and periods.
  • Tell you how your family should talk about these topics. Every script is a suggestion.
