Part 1: How to use these scripts
Welcome. This is a short set of five written scripts for the first conversation about periods with a child aged about 9 to 12. You read it, pick the words that sound like you, and say them in your own voice.
What this set does and does not do
It does:
- Give you five scripts: the first talk, "what if it happens at school," "I have questions," a follow-up check-in, and a talk for a dad or other caregiver.
- Give each script an opening line, three plain-language points, and two "if she says..." replies.
- End with a one-page "words that help" list you can keep on the fridge door or in a drawer.
It does not:
- Give medical advice or replace a conversation with your child's doctor or nurse. The health points here are general and describe what is typical.
- Cover sex education or relationships. These scripts stay with puberty and periods.
- Tell you the "right" way to parent. Every family has its own words, beliefs and comfort level. Treat each script as a suggestion, and change anything that does not fit.
