Part 1: Puppy week one checklist
A new puppy makes a house happier and busier overnight. The first week is mostly about three things: a safe space, a simple routine and a calm start. Everything else can wait. Tick these boxes and you will be ahead of most new owners.
Before pickup day
- A crate or pen in a quiet, warm corner. Large enough to stand up and turn around in.
- A collar or harness and a light lead. Check how it fits before you leave.
- Food: the same brand the puppy has been eating. Ask the breeder or shelter and write it down. Switch foods slowly, if you want to, over a week or more.
- Two bowls, one for water and one for food.
- Chew toys and a soft blanket. Something that smells of the puppy's old home helps.
- Cleaning supplies for accidents. They will happen.
- Puppy-proofing: lift up wires, shoes, plants and anything chewable. Block off stairs and rooms you want to keep off-limits.
- Book a vet check for the first few days. Bring paperwork from the breeder or shelter.
