Part 1: First, rule out the vet

A cat who pees or poops outside the litter box is not being spiteful. Cats do not plan revenge. They go where they feel safe and comfortable, or where it hurts least. Something is wrong: a health problem, a litter box problem, stress, or a mix of these. The good news is that most box problems can be improved by working through the possible causes in order. This guide gives you that order, with trackers to print and a worked example.

This is general information. It is not veterinary advice and it does not diagnose your cat. It gives no medicine doses and no promise of a fix.

Not veterinary advice. Call your vet if: your cat is straining to pee, going in and out of the box with little or no urine, crying in the box, or licking at their back end. A male cat who cannot pass urine is an emergency, so go to an emergency vet at once. Also call if there is blood in the urine or stool, vomiting, not eating, hiding, or if your cat is peeing outside the box and has also changed in thirst or weight.
