Part 1: Start here

Every August, stores fill with dorm room "must-haves," and every May, students carry half of them back home. This product helps you pack less, spend less and start the year with a roommate you have actually talked to.

It is a set of printable pages and short written guides for students moving into a residence hall, and for the parents helping them pack. It works for a double, a triple, a suite or a single. It does not replace your school's housing rules, which are the final word on what is allowed.

Three rules that save money

  1. Ask before you buy. Your housing office sends a list of what the room has, what is banned and what is smart to bring. Read it first.
  2. Talk to your roommate before you shop. Two people do not need two microwaves, and some schools do not allow either.
  3. Wait for the second week. Most of the things you will "need" show up after you have lived in the room for seven days. A short list now and a second shopping trip later beats a car full of regrets.
