Part 1: How to use this checklist
I am sorry you are here. This is a short, ordered list for the practical tasks that tend to follow a death in the family. It is meant to take some weight off your memory, so you do not have to hold every task in your head at once.
What this set does and does not do
It does:
- Put the common tasks in a sensible order across three stages: the first week, weeks 2 and 3, and week 4.
- Give you a list of documents to gather, a list of who to notify, and a list of tasks you can hand to someone who has offered to help.
- Show you what can wait, so that nothing feels more urgent than it is.
It does not:
- Give legal, financial, tax or insurance advice. Rules about wills, estates, benefits and death certificates vary by state and by situation. For anything specific, ask the agency or organization involved, or a qualified professional such as an estate attorney or a CPA.
- Tell you how you should feel, or how fast things should go. There is no correct pace for any of this.
- Cover every situation. Your family, your state and the person you lost are particular to you, so some items will not apply. Skip them without guilt.
