Scammers are good at sounding like someone you love. A frightened voice on the phone, a message from a grandchild who "lost their phone", a call from "the bank". A family code word is a simple, free defence. It is one word that only your family knows. If a call or message asks for money or urgent help, you ask for the word. A real family member knows it. A scammer does not.
This card shows you how to set one up in 15 minutes.
Step 1: Choose the word
A good code word is:
- Random. Not a pet name, birthday, street or anything a stranger could find on social media.
- Easy to say and remember. Two ordinary words together work well, such as "purple bicycle" or "tin lantern".
- Never written in a message. Do not text or email it. Say it in person or on a call you started yourself.
Avoid anything on your public profiles. If you could find it online in five minutes, so could someone else.
