Part 1: Start here, and choose a manager

This is a two-day plan for setting up a password manager and moving your most-used accounts into it. No video, no jargon, and no tech background needed. You will need a phone or computer, about six hours in total across Saturday and Sunday, and a pen.

What this guide does and does not do

It does:

  • Walk you through choosing, installing and setting up a password manager.
  • Help you create a master passphrase and an emergency kit.
  • Turn on two-step sign-in for your most important accounts.
  • Move your first 20 accounts into the manager, and give you a plan for the rest.
  • Give you a paper sheet that says where things are, so a trusted person can help if needed.

It does not:

  • Make you "unhackable." No tool does. A password manager lowers the chance that a stolen or guessed password gets someone into your accounts. It does not remove every risk.
  • Review or rank specific products. Features, prices and screens change, so this guide describes steps generically. Where it names a manager, it is only an example.
  • Guarantee that a locked account can be recovered. If you lose your master passphrase and every recovery option, some managers cannot open your data for you. That is partly why they are secure. This guide shows you how to prevent that.
