Part 1: Start here, and the one idea behind every scam

This is a seven-lesson course for you to work through, and then to share with a parent in short, friendly conversations. It is written for the adult child. A parent can read it too, and many will.

What this course does, and does not do

It does:

  • Explain, in plain words, how the common scam types work, so you and your parent can recognize them.
  • Give you one short habit that works against nearly all of them.
  • Give you practice scenarios, a cheat sheet and a plan for what to do if someone is contacted.

It does not:

  • Prevent fraud. No course can. It lowers the odds that a scam works on someone you love, and it gives you a plan for the day one tries.
  • Give legal, financial or law-enforcement advice. If money has been lost, your bank and the official agencies in Part 5 are the right next calls.
  • Teach anyone how to run a scam. Each scam type is described only enough for you to recognize it.

What is in each part

  1. Start here, and the one idea behind every scam
  2. Lessons 1 and 2 - phone calls and text messages
  3. Lessons 3 and 4 - email, romance and investment contact
  4. Lessons 5 and 6 - tech support, gift cards and payment apps
  5. Lesson 7 - after a mistake, and who to report to
  6. Seven practice scenarios and the cheat sheet
