Part 1: Start here, and Lesson 1: Money histories
Welcome. This is a six-lesson, text-only course for two people who share money, or are about to. Over six short sessions you will move from a first honest conversation to a written shared money plan and a date for your first check-in. It does not tell you what to do with your money. It gives you a path, wording, and worksheets, so the two of you can decide.
What this course does, and what it does not
It does:
- Walk you through six conversations in a fair order.
- Give you scripts, questions and fill-in pages for each.
- Show worked examples with made-up numbers, so you can see how a page looks when it is done.
- End with a written plan and a check-in date.
It does not:
- Give financial, tax, legal or counseling advice.
- Recommend any bank, app, account or product.
- Promise any particular outcome. Money plans work when people follow them, and life changes.
Several topics here, including joint accounts, shared debts, who owns what, and agreements in writing, have legal angles that vary by state, and differ for married and unmarried people. They appear in this course as questions for a professional. Treat them as prompts for an appointment with an attorney, a tax preparer, a nonprofit credit counselor or a fee-only planner.
