Part 1: How the 30-Day Reset works

A layoff can leave you with a long list of things that all feel urgent. This plan breaks the first month into 30 small tasks, about 15 minutes each, in an order that makes sense. It covers four areas: money, paperwork, routine and next steps.

What this plan does

  • Gives you one task a day for 30 days, grouped into four weeks.
  • Helps you build a simple daily routine so days do not blur together.
  • Gives you a progress tracker and three worked examples.
  • Helps you finish the month with a written picture of your money, your paperwork and your next steps.

What it does not do

  • It does not promise a job, an interview, a salary or a timeline for finding work. Nobody can honestly promise those.
  • It is not legal, tax or financial advice. Severance, unemployment insurance, health coverage (including COBRA) and 401(k) topics are covered as general information and "questions to ask". Rules vary by state and by employer. Your own documents and the official sources come first, such as dol.gov for unemployment insurance and healthcare.gov for coverage.
  • It does not replace a lawyer if you have been offered an agreement to sign, or a tax professional if you have a complicated tax question.
  • It is not a mental health service. If you feel hopeless or unsafe, contact a doctor or a crisis line. In the United States you can call or text 988.
